Went and saw Darren Hanlon in his Christmas show at the Toff in Town last night. It was an utterly gorgeous, laid-back and stripped down effort from the man whom I consider to be one of Australia’s best lyricists: heavy on songs from the last album, Fingertips and Mountaintops, but equally peppered with older songs to please the fans who’ve been there from the start. There were also a few particularly Christmas-orientated songs (as one would sort of expect from a Christmas show) including a hilarious holiday-themed murder ballad in which an entire Christmas congregation were killed by an exploding loaf of emo bread.
To add another example to the already lengthy list of evidence painting me as a completely oblivious nuffer, I was standing next to this girl who was dressed in this beautiful dress, and I spent much of the evening surruptiously admiring it out of the corner of my eye. What I did not realise until the encore, when Darren called her up on stage to sing with him, was that the girl in the gorgeous frock, who I had been standing next to all night, was Sarah Blasko.
I believe the expression is ‘head/desk’.
Anyhoo, it was a faboo night, and I’ll leave you with something special: a Darren Hanlon filmclip starring Daniel Kitson (I know, two totally awesome people in one thing! It’s like musical transformers).
Head/desk is right. Sarah Blasko is the bomb. I think she’s really shy in person so if you had of asked her about the dress she would have slipped into a coma or something from shock.
Cheers, Look at the photos of my new emo hair
